You may hear that phrase thrown around in conversation. Have you wondered what exactly that means? Right now as you read this, if you are struggling to get a client, this may be your ideal client statement…
“My ideal client would call me or knock on my door and pay me to be their photo organizer.”
Notice the “my” and “me” in that statement.
Your challenge today, should you choose to accept it, is to actually write down your ideal client profile. You should use words that describe the kind of person you want to work with and what problems you would like to help them solve.
As you describe this ideal client on paper, consider whether you enjoy teaching them how to do things or you prefer doing everything for them. Also consider what services you are passionate about.
Once you have a clear picture of your ideal client, it is much easier to have a conversation with anyone about what exactly you do and more importantly, who you serve.
The idea that you can serve EVERYONE and your business model and pricing strategy will be a perfect fit for EVERYONE is a myth.
I’m sure you’ve heard the phrase “target market” and that does go hand-in-hand with your ideal client profile. All too often business owners think their target market includes EVERYONE. (Also known in the advertising industry as the “spray and pray” method.) The thinking here is that if you talk to enough people that SOMEONE will finally hire you. But for today, we won’t go down the road about why this wastes so much time and energy and rarely works.
Instead, hone in on the traits of your ideal client and then find ways to reach them. This becomes your marketing strategy!
If my ideal client profile is a working professional who is successful and busy and comfortable paying for services that buy them more time – then I want to talk to corporate executives, doctors, lawyers, engineers, business owners, etc.
Once you have a few ideal clients, you will attract more of the same.
